Fire or Agni is a Devata and the sun is worshipped as its celestial form since time immemorial. Rig Veda is the oldest text in the world and the mention of Agni is found here too.

The Agni Suktam in Rig Veda 1.1 starts with

अग्निसुक्तम् - अग्निमीळेपुरोहितंयज्ञस्यदेवमृत्विजम्
“Agni as priest, lord, and master of sacrifice, the giver of prosperity and fertility”.

The fire was the focal point of a Yajna and no Yajna was complete without offerings to the fire. Hence, a culture in which fire has such a pivotal place cannot be far behind in making objects which carry the fire. The Deepam is the carrier of fire.  In households, it is customary to light a Deepam in the Sandhya Kalas (or twilight times, both morning and evening). And in many homes, the lamp is never allowed to burn out. Fire is also celebrated as a dispeller of darkness. There is a famous line from the Pavamana mantra in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad which goes

तमसोमाज्योतिर्गमय।
“Lead me from darkness to light”.
